Johannesburg Airport Guide

Comprehensive Johannesburg Airport Guides

Johannesburg Tambo International Airport is the busiest airport in all of Africa, and more than 16 million people each year pass through it on the way to their final destination. The airport has had many names since it first opened including being called Jan Smuts International Airport, and simply Johannesburg Airport. The latest name was introduced on 27th October 2006.

Tambo International Airport is located more than 1 a mile above sea level, and is about half an hour from the centre of Johannesburg. A new rail link is under construction that will cut the time taken for visitors to get to the city, but this is not due for completion until around the time of the next FIFA World Cup in 2010.

Shops are available at the airport, and there are also a number of arrival and departure lounges where passengers can freshen up after a long flight.

The International and Domestic terminals are separate, but it is easy to get from one to the other if you are only passing through Johannesburg on your way to another destination within South Africa such as Cape Town.
